Mail Carrier Safety

Overview

This project is a scenario-based safety training for new mail carriers. The goal of this training is to prepare new carriers for potentially dangerous situations they may find themselves in.

Audience: New mail carriers preparing for their first route.

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Figma, Google Docs

Problem and Solution

I come from a family of postal workers. From 2013 to 2014 I joined them as a mail carrier. While the importance of safety is always stressed, the safety training came in the form of an info dump and later a document of safety procedures. During my time at the Post Office, I saw coworkers experience dog bites, break bones on ice, and even frostbite on the hands. These situations indicate that the carriers did not take the action directed in the handout at the training.

To increase safety in this workplace, I followed the handout I was given on safety procedures and developed a scenario-based course. This course will help new carriers identify dangerous situations and give them choices on how to respond in the way that is the safest for themselves and the community. In this course, the learner can see the outcome of their choice and, if incorrect, gives them another opportunity to correct their mistake.

Process

I consulted with two current mail carriers about some of the most common problems they see coworkers face. I decided to create a scenario-based training which would simulate the first day on the job. I took 5 of the most common situations and consulted the current carriers on the action the coworker took which lead to the error and consulted the training handbook for the proper solution. I put this information in a storyboard to share with the SMEs and, while waiting for their response, created a visual style and tone of voice for the project, built and tested the interactive prototype on Storyline.

Text-Based Storyboard

After consulting with SMEs, I noted 5 of the most common safety issues experienced by their peers. To find the correct response to the situation I consulted the handbook given during training. Along with the correct response I listed the incidents given by SMEs which lead to danger. I also created a mentor character, Rick, who simulates the trainer who will accompany the trainee during the first week. Rick offers advice and eliminates one unsafe option with an explanation.

Development

After developing a storyboard to share with SMEs, I began developing the visual prototype in Figma. Once I received feedback from SMEs I began to build the project in Articulate Storyline.

Key elements

  • Hover states: on buttons to draw attention to interactivity

  • Sign-In: to personalize user experience by adding name

  • Trainer character: The character Rick offers a tutorial during the introduction on how to ask for help. Rick also offers an explanation for incorrect answers and references the issue upon completing the question.

  • Progress bar.

  • Result-based layers:

  • Result-based final slide: Depending on the user´s score, this final slide will either congratulate the user for their preparation or prompt the user to begin again.
